The city of Terni has an extraordinary witness: Saint Valentine, the protector saint of lovers and patron of the city. The many marvels of this part of Umbria start off with genuine and savoury cooking: the black truffle, the ciriole “alla ternana”(pasta), the faraona “alla leccarda” (guinea-fowl), the cold cuts accompanied with the tipical saltless bread. The best way to start our nature trail of this area is surely the Marmore falls, a majestic hydraulic engineering work achieved by the Romans in 271 b.C. in order to divert the course of Velino river into the underlying Valnerina, through a 165 meters high jum. Not far from the waterfall we run into the wonderful medieval villages Arrone, Casteldilago, Montefranco, Polino and Ferentillo, the marvelous Longobard abbey S. Pietro in Valle ending with the picturesque lake Piediluco, its lucus, the sacred wood, and the overlooking Albornoz fortress. The itinerary ends in Stroncone, a suggestive small village raising opposite to Cesi.
